"THE GREEN FIELDS OF AFRICA opened up a whole period I had forgotten and a whole society of which I knew nothing, and took me deep inside it. You must have dug well into some period of adventure as it comes so freshly off the page." Ned Sherrin
A historical love story set in the vast sweep of East African scenery, half a century ago.
A young European woman, born locally, regards herself as African, and a young National Service officer, newly posted to a Scots-Irish Commando; meet and fall in love.
Tension intensifies as he soon realises that she will never leave Africa, and he cannot stay. It is the time of isolated farms, threatened by roving Mau-Mau gangs, and of teeming wildlife.
There are vivid descriptions of bush warfare and the magnificent and unique scenery of Kenya. The author shows a deep knowledge and love of the African wilderness. There are also descriptions of the horror and bloodshed of the struggle against the Mau Mau gangs
Can they overcome the difficulties that face them in order to have a future together?
"This fills a gap in our understanding of the situations which arose as
Europeans were faced with a tragedy which was to become all too familiar
in Africa, involving the abandoning of farms and homesteads in the face
of terrorists.
The book gives a fair account of the contemporary problems, and exhibits
a deep understanding of Africa and African traditions. There are wonderful
descriptions of African scenes from the dense lowland bush to the eerie
uplands on the slopes of Mount Kenya."
